When it comes to people cultivating nature, monitoring could not be more important. Reforestation is often a reactionary effort, people’s attempt to rectify some of the widespread damage to forest ecosystems. However, how are we supposed to know if our efforts were successful? What were the outcomes? Did we meet our goals? And very important, how can we improve?

“Até hoje, as organizações estavam preocupadas basicamente em implantar projetos, sem olhar para trás e verificar o que deu certo ou errado. Com esta ferramenta, vamos aprimorar as ações existentes, corrigir falhas e compartilhar experiências de sucesso” – Pedro Bancalion, agronomist

Often, reforestation projects are such a logistical challenge that just implementing the project is a huge success. However, to date, most reforestation projects are not monitored. Conservationist have a lot to gain with systematic and standardized measures for monitoring what went right and what went wrong.

This article even addresses the importance of not only monitoring the ecological milestones in reforestation but to also monitor the social, economic and project management aspects also. The task at hand is to determine evaluation criteria. What makes a reforestation project a success? Number of trees planted? Land area reforested? Communities or association involved? Jobs created? Improving the institutional capacity of organizations?

This is something I would really like to get involved in…..who can get me the contact information for Miguel Calmon?
